Why minimum quantities exist

Custom packaging has fixed setup work for material purchasing, plate or print preparation, die-cutting, finishing and machine adjustment. Those costs are spread across the production quantity.

A complex structure or special material can therefore have a higher practical MOQ than a standard carton using common stock.

Ways to make a first order practical

Keep the box size and structure stable, use readily available material, limit special finishes and combine artwork variants only when the production method allows it.

Reducing quantity by adding many custom processes can raise unit cost sharply, so compare a few realistic quantity tiers instead of asking for one isolated number.

What a useful MOQ quote should show

Ask for quantity breaks, sample route, tooling assumptions, material specification, finishing scope, packing method and any overrun or underrun tolerance.

The lowest quoted MOQ is not always the lowest-risk option. Check unit cost, setup cost, storage capacity and expected reorder timing together.

Sample and approval checkpoints

Use a structural sample to verify size and fit, then a printed sample when color, material and finishing need approval. Record the accepted specification so production is checked against the same reference.
