Start with the product and channel
Light retail items often work with SBS/FBB or coated paperboard. Heavier or fragile products may need corrugated board, greyboard or a combined structure.
For ecommerce and export, protection and carton strength can matter more than a very smooth print surface.
Match the surface to artwork
Smooth white board is better for fine graphics, brand colors and premium finishes. Kraft paper gives a natural look, but it is less suitable for detailed image reproduction.
If Pantone color or fine text is important, review material and print samples before mass production.
Balance cost, structure and freight
A folding carton, rigid box and mailer may all carry the same artwork but use different material systems.
The right material should support structure, production budget and freight volume together.
Sample and approval checkpoints
Use a structural sample to verify size and fit, then a printed sample when color, material and finishing need approval. Record the accepted specification so production is checked against the same reference.
